J K Racing has been in operation for some 15 years, although
prior to
December 1996, was operating as solely a Hydroplane racing team. We have successfully owned and operated two hydroplanes, the first "ALTERED STATE"
was a conventional (sit behind the engine) hull, it was powered by a 327
Chevrolet.
We campaigned this boat for 4 years until it was sold to make way for a new hull.
The "frame pack" for this new hull was purchased from Peter Knight of
"Boss Moblie One" fame and built by J K Racing, it was named
"Capt'n Jack" and was a cabover type hull (sit in front of the
engine).
This boat was raced all over New Zealand, won many island titles and
championships, it was also powered by a 327 Chevrolet and traveled accross
the water at more than 130 MPH, unfortunately this boat was destroyed in a crash
at Lake Karipiro, all but killing its driver, who spent months off work re-couperating, the hull was
never
salvaged. A third boat was built, this time
from
plans
supplied from Ed Karlson of Seattle USA, but was sold
before we could race it. Dave Margon from Cambridge now
owns this one and runs under the name of
"Firecom". A fourth frame pack was built, and now sits in the rafters
of my workshop, along with its fully enclosed cockpit.
As more people were coming to us for parts and
engines, we no longer had the time to compete, so it was decided, and in December 1996 J K Racing became a business, concentrating solely on
building competition engines. We now supply engines and parts to some of the
most respected people in New Zealand racing today.
